Lissadell on the Beach, house  overview

Exquisitely restored and refurbished, this former estate manager’s house on the Lissadell Estate, renamed Lissadell on the Beach, is set within the vivid landscapes of the Land of Heart’s Desire, beautifully evoked in the poetry and paintings of the Yeats brothers,  at the foot of Ireland’s table mountain, Ben Bulben and on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lissadell on the beach is also adjacent to the magnificently restored 18th century Alpine walled garden of 2.5 acres, which includes the Lissadell heritage collection of Alpine plants, wonderful herbaceous borders, revêtement walls, ancient ponds and the Rose Walk. Tenants will have permission to access this garden.

Within, the 2800 sq feet property comprises living room, study with television and internet, bathroom and kitchen and outside utility on the ground floor, and two ensuite bedrooms on the upper floor, together with a reverie boudoir on the upper landing, and has been restored using the finest materials and attention to detail. Without, the property comprises a garden with magnificent views over the Atlantic, and access to a private oak tree dell.

Within, each room is decorated with Farrow and Ball heritage paint or William Morris wallpaper, and the floors and staircase have been crafted from hand limed Irish oak. The original 18th century sash windows have been beautifully restored and framed with oak shutters and William Morris handmade drapes. Art Deco Celtic design stained glass windows in every door allow natural light to illuminate the entire house. Each room is furnished with contemporary pieces intermingled with 19th and 20th century antiques and Irish Art from the Lissadell Collection, including paintings by Casimir Markievicz, Thomas Rose Miles, Alexander Williams, Douglas Alexander, John Faulkner and Erenice Gore-Booth.

An integral feature of the design of the house are the delightful cushioned welcoming seat at the windows, offering views across the gardens and the sea. The seating arrangements are thoughtfully designed to permit the sitter to enjoy the striking beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

With views of the Atlantic Ocean reaching far across Drumcliffe Bay to the burial cairn of Queen Maeve of Connacht atop Knocknarea Mountain, and of the 18th century Alpine walled garden beneath bare Ben Bulben’s head, where at dawn and at sunset one might see “Ben Bulben’s rose and fire shining afar o’er Sligo Bay”, this is a place to appreciate the poetic beauty of Yeats country, and walk in the footsteps of Ireland’s great poet, W. B. Yeats.
